6TH PERIOD Blog Posting on CONFLICT in "The Ethnics of Jim Crow..." for December 7th, 2018

Of the four types of conflicts in literature, (Character vs. Character, Character vs. Self, Character vs. Society, Character vs. Nature) which conflict do you consider MOST important in any text?

Image result for conflicts in literature

In your blog response, you must:

1. Identify specifically your choice of conflict that you and your buddy consider MOST important in any Literature.
2. Explain what this type of conflict entails (that is, show your audience that you have knowledge or awareness of this type of conflict)
3. Provide SPECIFIC evidence from the TEXT to prove why you consider this type of conflict to be the MOST important. Here, might want to use the CEC (Cite, Explain, Connect) protocol to build your reasoning and rigor for the discussion.

In the passage "The Ethics of Living Jim Crow: An Autobiographical Sketch" by Richard Wright the type of conflict the author brings out is Man vs Man. Man vs Man can be defined as the main character is having several altercations with other characters throughout the story. In the passage, the main character Richard faces many problems with his white co-workers during the time of Jim Crow. According the passage line 54-59 it says "You black son of a bitch! You called me Pease, then! "he spat, slapping me till i bent sideways over a bench. Morrie was on top of me demanding: Didnt yuh call im Pease? If yuh say yuh didnt. I'll rip yo' gut string loose with this f--kin bar, yuh black granny dodger! Yuh can't call a white man a lie 'n' giterway with it, you black son of a bitch". Richard is being verbally and physically abused by another character in the story. This is one of the main conflicts that occurred due to discrimination and inequality where black people are being mistreated by white people known at the time (Jim Crow0. Another example that supports this conflict are on line 90-95 it says " Yuh wanna ride t' town nigger? Yuh reckon yuh know enough t' ride now? I wanna walk I siad, simply Maybe it sounded funny. They laughed. Well, walk, yuh black son of a bitch! When they left they comforted me with : Nigger, yuh sho better be damn glad it wuz us yuh talked t' the' way. Yuh're a lucky bastard, cause if yuh'd said the t' somebody else, yuh might've been a dead nigger now". These details support this type of conflicting by showing the main character having a problem/altercation with a character who is also antagonizing his race/color.

    1. Alexander Malena and Akeem Olakule-We agree with Aziera and Walisha post about Man vs Man being one of the important conflicts with the main character having altercations with another character in a text. and that the main character Richard has to deal with problems with other characters( white co-workers) during the segregation time of Jim crow like when they said in lines 54-59 and lines 90-95 about Richard facing discrimination and inequality based on his race and referring back then to black people who back then faced it in real life. and that in this case in relation to Man vs Man its Richard vs The white folks compared to in real life during that time Blacks vs Whites. But we want to add on that when your explaining your evidence about Man vs Man you need to connecting part of cec approach to better advance what your talking about and make sure to double check for spelling errors

      - Your use of evidence was effective in proving your POV, and making your argument stronger. You were very specific in quoting the lines in the article and briefly explained what the text meant. You also used correct grammar and were very coherent. We agree with your argument, and believe that it was persuasive and straightforward. Next time, you can also explain the evidence more thoroughly to make your argument stronger.

The Conflict that we found to be most important in any literature especially in the text "The ethnics of living Jim Crow: An Autobiographical Sketch" By Richard Wright is Character vs Self because it shows problems that the Character Richard faces on a daily basics as a black individual mentally and emotionally.Character vs self is when a character is struggling with themselves on the inside. its more of an internal conflict at which anytime a character struggles with a moral dilemma or decision and even a desire we see at work in a text. For example in paragraph 7-8 it states " All that night I was delirious and could not sleep. Each time I closed my eyes I saw monstrous white faces suspended from the ceiling, leering at me.From that time on, the charm of my cinder yard was gone. The green trees, the trimmed hedges, the cropped lawns grew very meaningful, became a symbol. Even today when I think of white folks, the hard, sharp outlines of white houses surrounded by trees, lawns, and hedges are present somewhere in the background of my mind. Through the years they grew into an overreaching symbol of fear." This shows Character vs Self because it shows how Richard have to now deal with this prolonging fear of white folks after his punishment from his mother. This also connects to real life situations of racial discrimination that Richard goes through internal based on the basis of his race. Also in paragraph 38 it also says "Once I thought of reporting all this to the boss. But the mere idea of what would happen to me if Pease and Morrie should learn that I had "snitched" stopped me. And after all, the boss was a white man, too. What was the use?" This shows Character vs Self because he has decided not to face his problem with the boss since he's white and he believes the boss will treat him bad and terribly like his co-workers have treated him. This connects to how in real life and in the text people in any color are scared of each other and it affects their mental state on how to deal with it whether to give up or just dealt with it.

We Believe that the conflict in the text "The Ethics of Living Jim Crow: An autobiographical sketch Richard Wright" is character vs Society because the main character Richard Wright conflicts with racial issues pertaining to work and just a regular occasion like walking in the in street. As shown in the text the character deals with racial issues by being intimidated into leaving his job by his white superior coworkers. For example in the text it states "If I had said: No, Sir, Mr. Pease, I never called you Pease, I would have been automatically calling Morrie a liar. And if I had said: Yes, sir, Mr. Pease, I called you Pease, I would have been pleading guilty to having uttered the worst insult that a Negro can utter to a southern white man.” This shows the conflict of character vs society because there is a symbol of racial discrimination due to an average black man dealing with a controversial leadership or work relationship.Another example relating to the reason can be seen “ One morning, while polishing brass out front, the boss and his twenty-year-old son got out of their car and half dragged and half kicked a Negro woman into the store… I heard shrill screams coming from the rear of the store. Later the woman stumbled out, bleeding, crying, and holding her stomach.” This piece of evidence strengthens my idea on the conflict type which is character vs society, due to the similarity of skin color causing hate to the negroes.

We agree because in the text the overarching problem in the story is racism/Jim crow mentality shared by the white people and the the class that black people were forced to fill. This is shown in lines 24-36 where Richard Wright asks Pease and Morrie about the job and they both responded on the lines of since he is black he should know his place and that this is a white mans Job

The most important type of conflict is character vs self because in this case, the character is dealing with their own mental and personal issues that they cannot escape. For example, the text "The Ethics of Jim Crow" by Richard Wright, states "All that night I was delirious and could not sleep. Each time I closed my eyes I saw monstrous white faces suspended from the ceiling, leering at me." This piece of evidence goes to show that the main character was traumatized and had to deal with the outcome of his past experiences with white people that still haunt him. He feels conflicted and confused as to why he has to treat these people, that have the same position as him, with upmost respect, when he isn’t treated the same way.
Another example that demonstrates self-conflict is when the main character tells us "When I told folks at home what happened, they called me a fool. They told me that I must never again attempt to exceed my boundaries. When you are working for white folks, they said, you got to “stay in your place” if you want to keep working.” This is an example of Jim Crow laws, and the main character is struggling to comprehend this injustice. He was fired for something he didn’t do and has to deal with the repercussion. At the end of the day, he is excluded for his skin color and ashamed that he has to follow Jim Crow’s degrading laws.

I agree that character vs self is important because the evidence you used shows how the main character is going through issues and problems within himself. It shows that he doesn't only have problems with actual people but he is facing mental problems because of the people that he met.

The most important conflict is character vs character because it's the
most common type of problem we see in most literature. It's also the
most important because it helps builds the character and helps develop
the story by providing an issue that has to be overcome. In the text
"The Ethics of Living Jim Crow:An Autobiographical Sketch" by Richard
Wright it states in paragraph 4 lines 97-104 "late one Saturday night
I made some deliveries in a white neighborhood.I was pedaling my
bicycle back to the store as fast as I could, when a police
car, swerving toward me,jammed me into the curbing."Get down and put
your hand up!" the police man ordered.I did. They climbed out of the
car, guns drawn, faces set, and: advanced slowly. "Keep still!" they
ordered. I reached my hands higher. They searched my pockets
and:packages. They seemed dissatisfied when they could find nothing
incriminating. Finally, one of them said: "Boy, tell your boss not to
send you out in white neighborhoods this time of the night."As usual I
said:Yes,sir." This piece of evidence is important because it doesn't
only show that racism was not only within the society but also in
brute police brutality. This shows character vs character because it
shows the police harassing the Richard.

You show how the details are important which is great to readers to understand. However,to make this response better you should define the conflict just in case readers don't know. Also, you should also connect your citation to character vs character so it can be fully supported.

The Conflict that we considered as the most important in the text is Character vs Society. We came to this conclusion because the text is about the white people in the neighborhood being against the black kid. As stated in section 3,"I felt something hard and cold smash me between the eyes. It was an empty whisky bottle." The black kid was walking his bike on a hot, dusty road because his tire was punctured. A group of white boys pulled up aside him to ask if he needed help getting back to town. After accepting the help the group of white boys were drinking on the way back to town and asked the black kid if he wanted a drink. The black kid denied but did not say "sir". Because of the black kid not saying "sir", one of the white kids threw the whisky bottle at him. This shows character vs society because all the white boys were expecting him to say "sir" but all he said was "oh,no" and then the white kids treated him horribly just because he is black. Another way the text shows character vs society is in section 4 when the author includes "I was pedaling my bicycle back to the store as fast as i could, when a police car, swerving toward me, jammed me into the curbing." The kid was making a delivery in a white neighborhood and he was trying to get back fast and just because he was black the cop pulled him over and drew guns at him. When the police did not find anything they sent him on his way saying, "boy, tell your boss not to send you out in white neighborhoods this time of night". This shows character vs society because just because the kid was black and pedaling fast on a bike in a white neighborhood, they believed he was criminal and then tried to blame the kids boss for having him out at that time.

We agree that character vs society is the most important conflict. In the story we see how the society treats Richard in a bad way just because of his skin color. Ya provided good details and good evidence. Ya also provided a good explanation. The only thing ya need to add is a closing sentence to put everything together.

The most important conflict in the story that is shown is character vs society.
Character vs society is a conflict that the main character goes through and faces with the society.
The society in the story is attacking the character because of his skin color.
They also attack the rest of the black people in his community due to hatred and racism.
According to the story, it states "during the retreat a broken milk bottle caught me behind the ear, opening a deep gash which bled profusely".
This shows that the white kids threw a bottle at the boy just because of his skin color.
Moreover, the story states "Suddenly the watchman looked at me with a long, hard, fixed look and then pulled out his gun and said Nigger don't yuh like it.Oh yes sir I said with as much heartiness as I could muster."
This shows that the man was willing to kill the boy just for looking at him and the boy was forced to act like he liked the man.
Moreover, the story states "This is Richard, he is going to work for us."
This shows that the workers were using him as a slave and not a co worker and he had to act like it was ok.
Sometimes society will rise up against you but you have to stand strong.

  10. Character vs Society (Keon Graham and Sambhav Banstola)

The conflict that we think is the most important in the text "The Ethnics of Jim Crow" by Richard Wrights revolves around Character vs the Society.
We think that it’s character vs the society because it shows all the struggle and problems that the character have to face like how he was treated differently that white people and how he was discriminated by the society because of his dark skin color. He was insulted and disrespected why other white people verbally, mentally and physically for example in line 86-87 where it says “My elbows and legs were bleeding.Fist doubled, the white man advanced, kicking my bicycle out of the way.” Where he mentions about getting physically abused by the white people physically. He can’t do anything other than take the beating because of how the society was built and it was not a big deal for others. And throughout the text the person talks about how he was insulted by other people verbally by using racial slurs like “Niggers”. He was even being verbally attacked by his own co-worked who were supposed to be by his side in the work but they use to disrespect and insult by calling him a “Nigger” “Black son of a bitch” and making him look down upon himself in front of other white people by telling him “You think you’re white?, What you trying to get smart nigger”. They used those words to attack him mentally and kicked him out of his work because they didn’t wanted a black man around him and they were disgusted by him.

by: Alliyah Jennings and Nailiya Johnson
The conflict we felt which was most important was character vs. society. We think this because, throughout the text the character has multiple conflicts with different groups of people. Such as the white boys, his boss and the workers. In the text "The Ethics of Living Jim Crow:An Autobiographical Sketch by Richard in lines 12-14 "As usual we laid down our cinder barrage thinking that this would wipe the white boys out.But they replied with a steady bombardment of broken bottles."This shows one of the authentications that one of main character had with a group of "white boys".Another, evidence to support my position is in lines 87-100 "..I asked Morrie one day to tell me about the work.He grew red."Whut yuh tryin''t' do,nigger  git smart?,he asked."Naw;:I ain't tryin't' git to smart" I said ."Well, don't,if yuh know whut's good for yuh!" I was puzzled.Maybe he just doesn't want to help me,I thought. I went Pease."Say,are you crazy, you black bastard?" Peased asked me, His gray eyes growing hard. I spoke out, reminding him that the boss had said I was to be given a chance to learn something"Nigger, you think you're white, don't you?" "Naw,sir!"'Well , you're acting mighty like it!" "But,Mr.Pease, the boss said..." Pease shook his fist in my face." This example from the article shows conflict with his boss and worker and how the boss took matter into his hands to hit him and how the worker treats other based off race. Based on the evidence we provided this proves that there are multiple characters being racist, rude and nasty towards the main character which shows character vs society.

There are four different types of conflict in literature. The most important type of conflict is character vs. society. Character vs society is when the main character has a problem with a larger group, community, or culture. This element is the most important type of conflict because it is the most common conflict that takes place in different text and stories. For example, in the text "The Ethics of Living Jim Crow: An Autobiographical Sketch" by Richard Wright, the speaker is living in a time where society do not tolerate people of his skin color. This lead to him getting into many fights and even getting injured by the whites. For example, in the second paragraph, it showed Richard throwing cinder blocks at the white boys and the white boys would throw broken milk bottles in return. This proves the fact that the white boys considered Richard to be some kind of threat so they tried to seriously injure him. Also, in lines 97-104, it says that a police car came towards Richard, and search him to see if he had anything illegal on him, but they didn't so the cop told Richard to tell his boss not to send him out for delivery in the night. This shows another time when Richard is discriminated against by white people, who were the majority of the society.

    Character vs society
The most prominent conflict used in the text,"The Ethic's of living Jim crow:an autobiographical sketch"by Richard Wright, was character vs Society.Character versus society is when the Main character has a problem with a larger group of people/community.It's the most important in this scenario because it establish how the main character has a problem with the larger group. Its also important because it states how how the character respond to a larger group of individuals.Based on the text, various situation was associated on this conflict. For instance,In lines 25-36,it states that"Richard asked his co-workers,Pease and Morrey, about how to do the work and they responded nigger you think you white and stated to him that this is a whites man work". This shows how the Main character is trapped in a community which he find himself to be not able to fit in because of his skin color. This is a perfect example because it shows how he was outnumbered.Another example of The problem this society has is in lines 82-95 where his bicycle is broken so he is walking back to town and on his way a car pulls over and in the car where white men who asked if he wanted a rid when he got in they offered him a drink and in a instant without thinking he said oh no there responses to him saying oh no
then then hit him he fell out of the car and while hitting him they said nigger ain yuh learned no better sense than that because he did not say sir to them this is another example of the racism that is prominent in there society.

A conflict that we consider the most important is character vs. society. The main reason for this is because, the text could relate to how colored people gets treated in a real life. For example in the text "The Ethics of Living Jim Crow:An Autobiographical sketch" it says,"When I think of white folks, the hard, sharp outlines of white houses surrounded by trees, lawns, and hedges are present somewhere in the background of my mind". Therefore, this is showing how whites live better than colored. This is connected to character vs. society because it is showing how whites would always have a mentality where they maybe or are better than colored. Another example says,"After a few minutes I heard shrill screams coming from the rear of the store. Later the women stumbled out, bleeding, crying and holding her stomach. When she reached the end of the block, the policeman grabbed her and accused her of being drunk." In other words, this connects to character vs. society because, it shows how the policeman only accused and innocent women of being drunk only because of her skin color. Overall, people should get treated equally regardless of there skin color

  15. Character vs society (Ivan Lara , Trayvion Adams)

The conflict we consider most important is Character vs Society. We chose this because in the text it stated in the text "The Ethics of living jim crow :an autobiography sketch" that "My first lesson in how to live as a negro came when I was quite small". The quote shows that the society has shaped a certain way of living for the black people. Then in the text Morrie(the person who gave him his job) got mad at Richard for asking about the mechanics of grinding lenses, which then turned into Morrie getting mad at him for trying to learn. For example in the text "Whut you tryin t' do nigger git smart?" then followed by "say are you crazy black bastard?". Morrie did not want Richard asking questions or learning about something he did not have to learn about. He then told Richard "do you think your white". This is showing that in society the whites are praised over the blacks in anything that they do or anywhere they are. Another example of this in the text is Richard was riding his bike through a suburban neighborhood and was approached by white people in a car and was then hit by a whiskey bottle and had his bicycle kicked away from him. He was picked on just because of the color of his skin, society put targets on black peoples back for no reason only their race which causes them to get mistreated anywhere they go. This is why my partner and I choose character vs society.

In the story "The Ethnics Of Living Jim Crow : An Autobiographical Sketch" by Richard Wright, The conflict that is most important for my partner and I is character vs. society. Character vs. Society in literature means a specific character is having a hard time with another specific character's mindset in the story. In this specific story character vs. society stands out the most because throughout the story the main character reflects on his struggles of being discriminated because of his skin color during the Jim Crow era.For example, in paragraph 4 lines 98 to 101 the persona says, "While white strangers may being these neighborhoods trying to get home, they can pass unmolested. But the color of a Negro's skin makes him easily recognizable, makes him a suspect, converts him into a defenseless target". This shows the conflict of character vs society because that white people during the Jim crow era had more rights than black people causing blacks to be discriminated and targeted because of their skin color. Secondly, in paragraph 3 lines 85 to 86 the persona says," The words were hardly out of my mouth before I felt something hard and cold smash me between the eyes. It was an empty whisky bottle. I saw stars, and fell backwards from the speeding car into the dust of the road, my feet becoming entangled in the steel spokes of my bicycle. The white men piled out, and stood over me. Nigger, ain' yuh learned no better sense'n tha' yet?" asked the man who hit me. "Ain' yuh learned t' say sir t' a white man yet?" This shows the conflict of character vs society because the main character who was black was attacked by white men in a van because of the color of his skin. These examples of character vs. society highlights the persona need to share his experiences with being discriminated because of his skin color during the Jim Crow era. The persona successfully uses the conflict of character vs. society since the readers are able to fully understand from his experiences and change the way people view each other in today's society.

  17. In the story, " The Ethics of Living Jim Crow: An Autobiographical Sketch" by Richard Wright, the conflict that is shown the most in the story is Character Vs. Society. A character Vs. Society conflict is when the protagonist of the story has a strong belief against the majority of the community or surroundings and decide to act on it. We believe the conflict is character vs society because throughout the story as he works a various number of jobs he would come in contact with many white men who would verbally and sometimes physically assault him for being a negro. These events are shown throughout the story, for example, section 3 lines 73-87 he was delivering packages to the suburbs when his bike punctured and was approached by white people in a car who offered him a ride. He would accept but not for a ride but for an assault. As they started to drive off he would get physically assaulted by the white people. it states in the text "I felt something hard and cold smash me between the eyes, it was an empty whisky bottle.i saw stars.....nigger ain't yuh learned no better sense then that?
The white man attack him for not saying sir to the white men. In the text it also states"my elbows and legs were bleeding. the white man physically assaulted Richard for not respecting a white man.
Another example of a conflict between character vs society was at his other job at a hotel.he was assisting bell boys where he would help people in their room mostly prostitutes. One day as he assisted one of the ladies to get alchol he waited looking at the girl to get money. As he looked a white man yelled " nigger what the hell you looking at... keepyour eyes where they belong if you want to be healthy." the white man would verbally assault and threaten Richard for waitng to help one of the ladies. This shows how Richard encounters many white men and they would verbally/physically assault Richard for being a negro. character vs society is shown throughout the story and can relate to Richard.
As you can see Richard in the text " the ethics of living jim crow..." Richard tries to get over the struggle of his religion. he is coping with his many jobs as he is being assaulted physically and verbally. he is learning about living under the jim crow laws.
