5TH PERIOD Blog Posting on Conflict relevant to "The Ethnics of Jim Crow..."

Image result for conflicts in literature

Of the four types of conflicts in literature, (Character vs. Character, Character vs. Self, Character vs. Society, Character vs. Nature) which conflict do you consider MOST important in any text?

In your blog response, you must:

1. Identify specifically your choice of conflict that you and your buddy consider MOST important in any Literature.
2. Explain what this type of conflict entails (that is, show your audience that you have knowledge or awareness of this type of conflict)
3. Provide SPECIFIC evidence from the TEXT to prove why you consider this type of conflict to be the MOST important. Here, might want to use the CEC (Cite, Explain, Connect) protocol to build your reasoning and rigor for the discussion.

Remember that after your original post, you MUST respond to another pair's blog posting by either agreeing (with evidence) or contradicting (with evidence).

  1. Edwin Rivera, Angel Rodriguez The most important conflict is character vs society. Character vs society is basically something that is happening around not just with one person, or it can be a person defending himself/herself from everyone else/society. For example, black people vs white, that has to do with racism this is shown in the text " The Ethics of Living Jim Crow: An Autobiographical Sketch". In line 54 it proves a white person an company making racism remarks to the black people/person,"you black son of a bitch! you called me Pease, then!" he spat, slapping me, till i bent sideways over a bench. Morrie was on top demanding".

My partner and I disagree that the most important type of conflict is character vs. society. We say this because, for you to be able to overcome any conflict against a general opinion in the society you need to first overcome the conflicts within yourself. In this case that can be called character vs. self. for example, if you feel like the ideas planted in society are making you feel like less or bad, the best way to overcome this is by getting the right amount of confidence so this thoughts don't affect you so much.

We agree on Edwin Rivera and Angel Rodriguez that it is the most important type of conflict. The reason is because many white people assaults other races, mostly Negros during the Jim Crow Law. As shown in the text,"the boss and his twenty-year-old son got out of their car and half dragged and half kicked a negro woman into the store."This shows that even white store owners treat other Negros no respect than the whites even if its customers.

      Me and my partner agree
that the most important conflict is character vs society also because an environment around you can change a how a person is and acts.I say this because in the text it was a black person vs white people who were racist an they hurt him just cause he was black.I say this because in the text

My partner and I believe that the most important type of conflict is character vs. self. Character vs. self is when the character is having an internal issue with himself. We believe this, because if you have a conflict with yourself is harder to overcome any other type of conflict. for example when the character asked himself "when was I ever going to be a good boy?" this supports my claim because the character is having a dilemma with himself about when he is going to learn. At this point of the reading the author feels like he needs to learn how to act around white people. This is followed by the decisions he takes for example when the character says "I was very careful to pronounce my sirs distinctly, in order that he might know that I was polite" this supports my claim because the decisions he takes are part of the conflict with himself.

We feel that this is another adequate conflict found in the text because there were instances in the text where Richard wanted to do something but he hesitated because he knew of the punishment that awaited him if he did such thing/action.Jim Crow laws had shaped the colored perspective to follow the white mans rules and if they didn't, they would have to face the consequences of the white man.

    2. Angel Rodriguez and Edwin Rivera We disagree because we think character vs society is most important because it happens around our community and it affects us/you because of the bad environment that happens around us most of times. For example, Richard in the beginning of the text " The Ethics of Living Jim Crow" he use to live in a bad community with gangs and all the violence made him join a gang. This caused him to start fights with the white boys of the community and this shows that the environment started to change and affect the community and the innocent people can get involve into it because of its change and it couldn't be helped, this shows an example of what Richard went through.

We disagree on Juan Almonte and Edgar Rojas because character v. society is the most important conflict in the text. The reason is because the society(which are the white people) always torment, or other assaults to the persona, which makes his life more complicated and hard. As shown in the text,"I was very careful to pronounce my sirs distinctively, in order that he might know i was polite." This evidence shows that in his jobs he has to show more respects to his boss or companions in order not to get problems with them.

In the story"The Ethic of Living Jim Crow" there are several conflicts that our main character Richard Wright has to endure during this time but there is one that tops them all.The most important type of conflict found within the text is "Man vs Society".This main conflict is very important because this specific conflict is what all of black America had to undergo during the time of Jim Crow Laws.Richard is just an prime example of what happened to colored people. The conflict "Man vs Society" can be found throughout the entire text because our main character is living in a time where racism was at at its peak with the Jim Crow Laws in effect. He has to deal with racial inequality from white people every where goes and is forced to abide by these biased laws.In text there has been an instance where Richard has been threatened at his place of work due to his skin color.During this time if ANY colored person were coming out of line/order or even suspected of doing it,they were punished for it.This shows us that the entire black society as a whole was treated differently by the white population at the time.Jim Crow laws put colored people very far down in sociey.

In the story "Ethics of living Jim Crow an Autobiographical sketch by Richard Wright" the author uses character vs Character. Character vs Character is a disagreement/ argument between two characters. in the story the two characters who are in a disagreement are Richard Wright and the White people. I say this because in line 2 says "I belonged found itself engagaed in a war with the white boys who lived beyond the tracks". This shows character vs character because the black people(Richard Wright) are in a mini war with the whites. I say a mini war because its not like its a large number a whites and blacks its a small group or (gang).

my partner and I disagree with this conflict of choice because we feel that the most imperative conflict is character vs society. Due to the fact that Richard Wright is discriminated by white people in society based on his color of skin as he writes that " You black son of a bitch!". Here this demonstrates that Richard Wright had been dehumanized and discriminated to absolute max by white people.

We agree with man vs. society because from reading the passage we can see how you seen man vs. society because during those times their was a lot of segregation between whites and blacks.for example in the passage when they mentioned a war between Richard Wright (the author) and the whites from across town they also mentioned the time when he got cut with a broken glass bottle. the society in this reading is the whites while man is the black people i say this because blacks have and still are a minority meaning the smaller number or part, especially a number that is less than half the whole number. this shows how the blacks were treated during times of segregation as less of a whole.

  8. Character vs. Society (Alexis Ramirez and Gameel Alghazali)

A conflict that we consider as the most important in the text is Character vs. society. The reason is because the text is mostly about the persona being assaulted and insulted by the white people in a white neighborhood. As shown in the text (The Ethics Of Living Jim Crow: An Autobiographical Sketch) by Richard Wrights,"I saw stars, and fell backwards from the speeding car into the dust of the road,my feet becoming entangled in the steel spokes of my bicycle...My elbows and legs were bleeding.Fist doubled, the white man advanced, kicking my bicycle out of the way."(Section 3,line 85-87)This shows that people assaulted even if he mistakenly said something to them.Another reason it is character vs. society is that even in his job he gets assaulted by white workers. Also, as stated in the article,"Nigger, you think your white, don't you?... Pease shook his fist in my face...he spat, slapping me till i bent sideways over a bench."(Section 1,line 31-54) As shown in the text, workers in his job bully him because he is negro.

I agree with character vs. society because based on the text "Ethics of Living Jim Crow:An Autobiographical Sketch" Richard living in the bad neighborhood in the beginning of the text with all the violence by the white boys and gangs, it dragged him into joining a gang. This environment made him violent and start wars or fights with the white gang that tried to get him and his gang. Because of Richard Wrights skin color it made people that weren't the same go up against him and treat him bad as it is shown throughout the text.

  9. In literature, the most important choices of conflict are "Character vs Self" and "Character vs Society". A Character vs Self conflict will occur when a character is struggling with themselves on the inside. This type of conflict occurs with other conflicts as well. Anytime a character struggles with a moral dilemma or decision we see this at work. A Character vs Society conflict is when a protagonist has a strong belief against the majority of the community or surroundings and decides to act on it. Since this type of conflict is between a character and an outside group, it is classified as an external conflict. In the text "The Ethics of Living Jim Crow" it stated "We were living in Arkansas. Our house stood behind the railroad tracks. Its skimpy yard was paved with black cinders. Nothing green ever grew in that yard. The only touch of green we could se was far away, beyond the tracks, over where the white folks lived".

There were some mistakes that we found in this written paragraph about conflicts is where he said that " Everytime a character vs. self occur it also be apart of other conflicts as well", but this statement was not applying to all other conflict a character vs. self does not occur with any conflict but it self. In conclusion the paragraph was outstanding because he uses example and evidence to explain his claim.

I agree with character vs self because the character was really struggling with themselves, but need to explain on how the protagonist had a strong belief against the majority of the community.

Character vs. Society: This is refering to the main character having a problem with a large group of people, community or culture. According to the text "The Ethics of living Jim crow:An autobiographical sketch" by Richard Wright character vs. society played a huge role where in section (1) stated that the persona was assaulted and insulted by a group of people in his neighborhood and workplace. In paragraph (2) line (11-17)," The persona was part of a gang in his Arkansas neighborhood where him and his members were attacked by a group of white boy's where a huge war broke out and Richard Wright was injured by a broken milk bottle behind his ear". This is where the persona was assaulted by the white's and was took care by a neighbor while he was left paralyzed in the center of the yard.Another example where the character faces society were in his new black neighborhood in Mississippi, in his new job at the factory where he worked for the white people. He was being insulted by co-workers who was supposed to help him in the workplace where vice versa they insulted him by calling him "Nigger, Black son of a bitch, You think your white?, What you trying to do get smart nigger".These were the quotes where he was insulted by his co-workers and was then told to leave the factory and never come back to work because he was black they did not wanted him to be around them in this factory.

My partner and I think that the most important literature is character vs society due to the racism society we live in now. Character vs society is exactly a protagonist feels when he or she has a conflict with society. For example in the autobiographical sketch by Richard Wright it shows all the struggle he went through and how he was treated differently than whites and discriminated by whites in many different ways. For example in the text it quotes "Nigger, you think you're white, don't you".By this they trying to show that blacks cant have the same rights or opportunities as whites. Overall, Richard Wright feels like blacks will never see themselves as white with the same rights and that blacks are below the whites.

the conflict that we consider the most important is (character vs.society) because the narrator is been discriminate by the white people,he was living in a white people neighborhood behind a railroad track, that means that they were living in a low class. character vs.society because we he move to an other town he still having problems to get a job even if they were living in a black people neighborhood with black teachers, black schools and black grocery stores but when he finally found a job was in a white people factory and they still discriminate him.

My partner and I believe that the mist important type of conflict is character vs character. It is when two or more people engage in a physical/verbal conflict between each other and rises to a terrible thing. In the text "The Ethics of Living Jim Crow" the main character deals with people living at war with each other [blacks v.whites]. Richard Wright describes him living in Arkansas where black people and white people are going at war with other and he tells us that the people are picking up objects to fight each other with like broken bottles and cinders. at this point the author wanted to describe/inform the readers how it was like back then where black people and white people where fighting each other [character v. character]. me and my partner feel strongly about the problem if u do or dont let us know.

The main conflict in the text is a form of racism which is an example of character vs. society. For example in line 1 "Nothing green ever grew in that yard only touch of green was where the white folks lived". This shows how the white people had a much better community. By this you can tell how black people didn't get treated equally. Another conflict in this text is person vs. person. For example in line 2 "but they replied with a steady bombardment of broken bottles ...a broken milk bottle caught me behind the ear opening a deep gash which bled profusely". this example shows how the white folks and colored people had bad connection because of racism .

We agree with this group conflict that is presenting as the article of "The Ethics of Jim Crow" because character vs. character is defining that the persona is having some problems with another character and that character is a white person that is a co-worker working with the persona in the factory.
