Option 2:
Read and respond to the quote below:
"Lately, it has been drawn to my attention that music is no longer the way it was. To be honest I believe that is just muffled and hidden inappropriate messages with a catchy tune. It distracts people( mainly children and young adults) and makes them uncivilized and barbaric. It gives people an unusual rage, and it influences them to carry the weight of the world upon their shoulders. But I often wonder why? Back in the day, music had the opposite effect, it was to lift your spirits and calm your anger, not enhance it."

DeleteI chose option two because i like talking about this kind of stuff. Allot of people in the older generation seem to think that the music we the younger generation listen isn't good for us and is poisoning the youth. I tend to disagree with that because a vast variety of artists now a days make both positive and good music, for example one of the hottest artists in my generation and gets associated with music of my time now is lil uzi, uzi fits the description that people put on my generation perfectly him and other artists such as lil yachty, kodak black, famous dex, and XXXtentencion and no i am not joking that's actually his name. How ever there's many artists that make good music with positive messages behind them, chance the rapper is someone that comes to mind when I think of good artists in this generation his last project "coloring book" was uplifting in a sense and had allot of references to god in it. So when people say no one makes good music anymore i find that hard to believe.
Matthew M.
DeleteI agree with you, but i just think the kind of things some rappers now-a-days say is kind of horrible and messed up. Most rap songs i here talk abut shooting people and smoking weed and Having intercourse. I know some people like that kind of music, most people in my school do. But i just don't think that's the kind of topic people should be rapping about. Especially if little kids listen to it. Because the kids might actually do the things in the song such ass Drugs,Sex and Violence. I'm not saying don't curse or have fun. Just be mindful of what you say or sing about.
I chose Option 2 because the student's perspective on Music now is similar to mine. The student gives valid reasoning on why music isn't the same and they send out the wrong messages. He/she wrote"it was to lift your spirits and calm your anger, not enhance it." I think that isn't necessarily true in the sense that there are many different genres of music. The student didn't narrow it down to one genre and I'm pretty sure they're targeting a certain music genre. The student also said its uncivilized and barbaric. That was completely irrelevant because people still consider Rock and roll barbaric or the devils music but, a lot of people endorse that kind of music. Saying its uncivilized isn't a good adjective to use since we consider other countries uncivilized because they're not under democratic rule.

ReplyDeleteOption 2:I don't think music has changed much, Rappers like 50 Cent and Tupac were just as violent, Eminem is actually the reason Albums have to have a Parental Advisory sticker, Introduced by Tipper Gore (A politician) and her predecessor Lynne Cheney. The case also questioned freedom of speech in music and it is now common knowledge song lyrics cannot be used as evidence for a crime (The song "Hot N****" by Bobby Schmurda is not the reason he was arrested). Considering how rap paved its way through the 80's and 90's and the way technology allows us to share content very easily and gain media exposure it is no surprise indie artists want a chance at money and fame, and even if the music is of lower quality people still listen to it and it still generates income. I agree a lot of modern rap is garbage but not all of it, and music, as with anything effects people differently. There will be some people who focus and others who get distracted but that's with anything in life, Think about how much time the youth waste with video games that will mean nothing in 5 years. Most of the people listening to angry music are already angry inside, you're not seeing the effect of the music, you're seeing the effect of their environment growing up. Growing up struggling encourages people to be independent and gives them a different kind of ambition you can't build any other way, and in rougher gang filled environments like Chicago staying angry could mean the difference between life and death, while this doesn't justify anything, that's where trap/drill music originated in the first place. Consider listening to "White Aemrica" By Eminem.
quintan h
Deletei agree with this cause music has some many sections to listen to if u want that drill stuff u would listen too Chicago rappers, if u want stuff about the hood and how things is messed up then u can listen to jay-z or jcole, but what im trying to say is that music is evolving so of course its not gonna be the same cause we live in a different era that that of quote states. but u also have the option to block it out by not listening to it when it comes on.

DeleteJerod_M i agree with Quintan_H because there are so many variety of music to listen and some music causes violance because the lyrics

ReplyDeleteI hear this topic being talked about very often especially by people from a different generation.
To be completely honest if you think about it the true meaning behind the making of music and the listening of specific types of music is for one to express themselves. Is it not? As times change the way people behave, carry themselves, and feel change as well. As always one may listen to love songs if they are going through something that they may relate to. But as for the “mumble rappers” they just provide an energetic form and way for the youth of today’s generation to express themselves and even better bring excitement into their everyday lives. This is actually how they lift their spirits. As to music such as drill and trap music they aren’t meant to anger but to help those who can relate.
T'Sha F
DeleteI Agree with this because as the generation changes the mindset changes to .

ReplyDeleteI chose option 2 because I think is actually HELPING society. For example when I do my homework I always listen to music mostly rap and believe it or not it actually helps me concentrate. when my needs to relax she listens to music to calm her down.my whole family listens to music. the only reason why my parents don't let me listen to certain music because it have curses but luckily there is clean versions so I just listen to that but its still cool.
I agree, i feel like it doesn't matter what the song is saying as long as it is catchy cause it will have you focused on things your doing. i do my homework while listening to songs like "do what i want" by Lil Uzi Vert and he doesnt have alot of lyrics. He uses the same lyrics but makes it sound good in my opinion.

Deletei agree with this statement because the music now really motivate me to do better things in life.Rather then being in the house and bein bored these songs motivate to get money and see and do things i couldn't without it.
Alton.M
ReplyDeleteI chose option two because this topic is heavily talked about in my family and on television. The type of music a person listens to doesn't determine their personality. They have the right to listen to whatever they want and who are people tell them that they can't. Music doesn't make someone angry and barbaric, anyone who thinks that has the wrong look on life. Music doesn't make someone go out and commit a crime, music actually saves people when you really think about it. Alot of rappers had really bad criminal records before they found music and pursued that passion. You would be suprised how many rappers went from the streets to the studio because of their talent. Music has saved the lives of many young artists today and from other generations. It took some out poverty and made them rich, it took some artists off the streets and gave them a positive direction and a purpose in life. Don't knock artists because of the lyrics they say because they can be telling you their life story and you should not judge anyone for saying their story no matter how devastating or angry it is.
Michael H
DeleteI agree because people like the type of music like and music has help out of people to get to better places in life and must times they rap or sing to tell people about real life situations and/or the struggles they have overcome so people can relate
Kareem.Thomas
DeleteGreat argument and very agreeable because a lot of people who don’t take their time to listen to these types of music and understand the artist can only give a unfair outside view.

I think that it depends on the music you listen to and the way you think about what you listen. Some music does include violation and cursing but if you understand you the lyrics behind it you would be able to understand what the artist is trying to say. New school music and sometimes looked as trash because people don't take the time to understand the deeper meaning and get stuck at the language. Some of the old school artist curse and take about some of the same things the the new school artist talk about. A lot of the songs go pass just the beat and the language. I prefer the new school music because that's the music I grow up in and that I understand more about and what they are trying tell in the lyrics. My parents don't have much liking in it because of the language just like a lot of other older people.
marc s
ReplyDeleteI feel the same way because when I lis6en to rap my grandma says I cant listen to it because it have curses in it but I tell I can just listen to the clean version plus there is Christian rap out there that talks about out lord and savior Jesus Christ

I agree and disagree with this statement for many reasons. One reason I agree with the statement because the music today did change dramatically from the old school music. Back in the day music use to influence the youth and even the elderly. But now a days everyone wants to be "down" when I say down i mean wanting to be apart of the click . I also disagree with this statement because it all depends on what type of person you are and what music you listen to. Also it depends on how you interpret the song.
Michael H
DeleteI feel Similar but also think that music didn't change that much so from the old school music but it is just said in a different way and in form from back then
Emanuel M
DeleteI agree whit you T'Sha, i understand where you coming from about the music they had back in the days about how it use to be a good influence to others and about now days how everyone want to be down with the stupid rap music. But in this new generation you cant really tell young people what to listen to and how to make their music, their listen to nonsense that makes them ignorant.

ReplyDeleteOption #2
i think that it depends on the music you listen to. some people listen to music on their moods, some music include violence and cursing but its the lyrics you gotta listen to understand what the artist are trying tell in the lyrics. personally i like new school music more cause i grew up listening to but i listen to old school music sometimes.
Gregory D option #2 I think you are very wrong because in this day and age music has different genre's like rap,country,dub-step,and etc where there are many millions types of songs that display different types of emotion like happiness, sadness, and anger. To say that music is just muffled and hidden inappropriate messages with a catchy tune, I find that very ignorant and idiotic.I think you don't understand that music just like anything and everything in this world changes.Back then music was some thing you'd barely heard, with the introduction of mass inventions like the radio music could be heard anywhere at any time. For research purposes I think its best if you at least try to find music that caters to you like "lift your spirits and calm your anger" type before you post ignorant comments like this.
ReplyDeleteRoberto D
DeleteI agree, There are different genres, categories etc, and people jump to the conclusion all new school music is bad but if you really listen to the song the artist has a story behind it, and sometimes the song is actually trying to teach you something, you just have to think about what is being said, instead of instantly calling it bad music, a lot of the music that hits mainstream is music you vibe to, these kind of songs are more for the beat than their lyrical content, every artist has different types of songs for the varying mood of the artist. If we applied the same strict criticism to music from the 90's-20's then we could say a lot of the same things.
Jerrod M I feel that Option 2 is not really wrong because there are types of music that make you think deeply and feel the ambition for something like country song. Sometimes there are song such as Hip-Hop or rap that makes you think deeply because if you play music backwards you can hear the message in the song and it will make you think deeply what the song is really about and what its trying to tell you

DeleteI agree with this statement cause im in my bag i bump aboogie cause he talks about what nd how i feel at the moment. Or i might bump to j cole if i wanna hear something deep thats not obvious to understand. Music is for everyone but the type of music is not but thats ok cause theres so many artists that u will find the one u like

I agree with the statement above. These days when u go down the street all u hear is mumble jumbo crap with no real words nd just catch phases nd when u do hear words its "gang gang" like i wanna listen to some fire with out getting smoked for jamming to that. Music now is a if u have a good beat then u got that heat nd everyone gonna like it no matter what they say. Another thing is theses rappers today say mad sus things nd people saying it cause they dont know what it means but then be a hypocrite nd say im not with the homosexual stuff. But i also have to disagree cause every generation has its own music nd this music relates to the yoinger people geowing up nd its what the younger generation like cause we are the future. The old people got that earth wind nd fire nd i dont know about u but im not bumping to that. While now we got lil boat nd the older people wont bump to him so its mutual with the music.
John K
ReplyDeleteOption 2 is wrong because people back in the day also had music the made people rage over stuff but also there is different type of music that people can listen to keep them calm and relaxed. The music is not the only thing that can make people rage its also personal thing that is happening to the person so the music just triggers them to do and act the way the person acts.
Clifford q.w i feel like Option 2 is some what right but also wrong. you can say some artist like lil uzi, future, rea sremmurd, the weeknd, and migos all talk about drug, sex, money and gun but hip hop was all way talk about those thing. new age rap is being talk down upon for no good reason.
ReplyDeleteBrooke D
ReplyDeleteI chose option 2 because it all depends on what type of music your listening to;And also which artist your listening to because while some artist send the wrong message with their music;Others actually use their songs to send the right message though the experience they have faced; And to tell the listener not to be like them.In some ways music from back in the days use catchy beats to disguise the message of the song So basically I believe the music from now is no different from the music back then
Emanuel M
ReplyDeleteoption #2
I chose option # 2 because i understand where you coming from an i totally agree. See back in the days artistes made music to express them self and some made music to make people feel good. Music suppose to make people feel good, lift us up,motivate us and to put us in a grove. But in this new generation music is all about money, girls and drugs which is just madness. There's still a few rappers who raps about reality an talk straight facts like: J.cole, big sean and others. The main point i'm trying to make is that hip hop or music it self has been change because of our new generation.

ReplyDeleteYes I a Gree rap music is longer the way it was. To be honest I believe that is just muffled and hidden inappropriate messages with a catchy tune. It distracts people with rap like Desiigner,
xxxtnetacion, lil yachty and lil uzi vert.
Mark G.
DeleteI agree because Those artist are perfect examples of "rappers" that only pay attention to the beat and not lyrics
your speaking the truth but desiigner is a mumble rapper he can barley talk in his videos and hes sometimes high during his interviews.
DeleteLeon B.
ReplyDeleteOption #2: I personally agree with your claim about music not being the same. It's been proven that Hip-Hop of this era or generation has been taken over by mumble rappers who really can't freestyle at all, however their songs that they take time to write is actually good to listen too. For example, let's go back to the 2016 and the recent 2017 XXL Freshman classes which promotes rappers that are making it too the top of the music industry as newcomers. In 2016 we had Kodak Black, Lil Uzi Vert, 21 Savage and then in 2017 you have Kyle, xxxtentacion and when you have them freestyle they actually can't. Unlike Drake or J.Cole or Kanye West their not skilled lyricist, and have no type of barz.
before you come at my son xxxtentacion you should go back and watch his 2017 xxl freestyle again and actually listen to what he's saying.you're not a true xxxtentacion fan. btw how you include kanye west as a skilled lyricist but not kendrick lamar.
DeleteI was rushing to write this but yes Kendrick Lamar is a skilled lyricist we all know that, but I am not a real xxxtentacion fan. " Look at me " is the best song he ever made in my opinion but I heard his freestyle and it was wack. Like come on!

No I Don't Technically Agree With Agree With This Question I Somewhat Agree. I say This Because Even Music Back in the day for example Metal has Always been violent. So In My opinion nothing has changed and it is still the same as it use to be. Music Was Always Barbaric As it aims for a younger fan base at least most. People say that they don't like modern day Rap but then again they still listen to it. Music that is not "Barbaric" Makes less money or revenue as it mainly entertains the older fan base and the younger people aren't interested. So most rappers aim for younger fan bases and it seems this is what hey like.
I chose option 2 because I Also understand how nowadays music is changwed and effects us. Because this music there are so many crimes being comitted. It creates a image that the public follows .Also that kind of music is the only type being promoted. Music with bad words and a bad concept is what the public likes to hear.

Old school "hip hop" has a music based prevalently on african american culture. Artist such as Tupac, biggie smalls, and eazy e often rap about what they see which is called reality rap and the struggles of growing up in a racialized environment and the work they put in to get to where they were. "New school" hip hop has a different types of lyrics. rappers from today's generation sing typically about girls, money and cars they have. some even sing about how they do drugs, drink and party which is an bad influence to some bad listeners. Some of these rappers today did not have it hard like old school rappers. thats why i believe old school rap is better.

I feel like people who don't understand what a LGBT person goes through. Some kids who come out to they're parents get kicked out of they're house or disowned or even abused. Just because they like the same gender, that means they should be shamed and bullied? Aren't they human too? They chose to be happy and love who they wanna love. So what's the problem with that? Religious people normally say God doesn't like Gays or Lesbians or anyone in the LGBT community. But didn't God create everything and everyone? If he hates that about people, why would he put them on this earth? Most people in the world got over Slavery with African Americans and decided "HEY, THEY ARE HUMANS TOO! JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE DIFFERENT COLORS DOESN'T MEANS THEY SHOULD BE ABUSED AND KILLED!". If we got to the high of a level regarding Equality, why can't we do the same With LGBT people. African Americans can't help being black and i get that. But LGBT people can't help falling in love with the person they really care about. So it's not that different. I just wish people were more Mature and Accepting towards the LGBT Community.

I agree that music has changed a lot but I think that's normal and will continue to happen to all genres of music. Pop music today is mainly about having a catchy hook to sing a long to. I would agree that music back wasn't as violent, it was mostly happy music to dance to. But the student didn't specify what genre of music they were talking about because even back then, they had music similar to metal and people say that is violent.

in the video , the students talk about their experiences in school as a member of the LGBT community. they all said that's its scary to be in school and that they dread having to wake up and go there. its extremely said that people have to be afraid to get up and get an education because they're being bullied by people that choose not to accept them. it shouldn't matter how they identify. they're still humans. humans are entitled to freedom. freedom- which includes the right to love whom ever they want, and to be who ever they want to be. or at least that's how it should be. it just really shouldn't be an issue that someone isn't exactly how you expect them to be. no one is the same and it would be boring if we all were.
Matthew M.
DeleteI Agree with you Genesis and it is Horrible that people are afraid To walk into a building that will help them be successful in the future because of people who don't accept them just because they are different and choose to be happy. And it would be an awful place if we were all the same, People wouldn't be happy with the person they are dating or married to and they wouldn't like the life they live since they have no freedom to love who they want to love. I see no reason to not Accept the LGBT community because they are just people who want to be happy And love who they want to love.

I agree with option number 2 because music is powerful. Believe it or not, when you feel any emotion you get the urge to listen to songs that either try to change your mood or embrace it. As well as when your in love, you listen to music that make you feel more in love or describe your feelings towards your partner. So when we young adults listen to music that isn't beneficial to us, it can often have a heavy influence.
Genesis R.
Deletetrue. music does influence your thoughts and feelings. when i'm sad, i listen to happy music or watch funny videos because i know it will lighten my mood.

ReplyDeleteI agree with your statement about music not being the same as it used to be. It's been proven that rap of this generation has been taken over by mumble rappers who can't freestyle for their life. But when they have time to write it actually sounds good. Let's take a look at the 2016 and the recent 2017 XXL Freshman classes which helps upcoming rappers that are making their name for themselves get in the music business. In 2016 we got lil yatchy, Lil Uzi Vert, 21 Savage and then in 2017 you have Kyle and xxxtentacion and when you have them freestyle they can't. Unlike J.Cole, logic or Kendrick Lamar their not skilled lyricist, and have no type of skill. So when people say music isn’t what it used to be I agree with them all the way.

I agree with option 2 because music really is something that sends a powerful message to the listeners but now a days music is just all about guns and killings and selling drugs people listen to music that isnt beneficial for them instead of music that is gonna help them focus on striving to be great music helps wit a lot of things and has a big impact on peoples emotions because music helps with changing moods but if its always talking about killings than its gonna make people think they have to kill other people to solve there problems
David W
ReplyDeleteI agree with option 2's opinion because it has truth to It. Music does have it's ups and downs effects to it,it all matters on how you take it. Some people love music for the cool and catchy beat, while other like how the words relate to their everyday lives. Rock music for example, the "singers" usually scream their lyrics instead of sing it. That is their way of releasing their rage as well, and music lovers who are going through a hard time and do not know of any other way to release their stress, usually follows the same method. Music is also a bad thing because people( mostly teenagers) look at it as their only form of comfort, and it eventually makes them obsessed with it, and make them feel like they can't live without it.
oh no K.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with option 2's opinion because like some others stated it's mainly the older generation that has these thoughts on our generations music not understanding that some of the artists actually explain their lives and how they came to be while yes, having some anger here and there and maybe some mumbling but mostly staying positive. Also what the older generation tends to ignore or misunderstand is that these artists weren't always the way they are now both financially and mentally and some of us in this gen. can relate and that's why these songs have so much meaning to most.
Nicole F.
ReplyDeleteI chose option 2. Basically this quote is saying that music now is worse than music back then because today's Music "distracts people( mainly children and young adults) and makes them uncivilized and barbaric." I agree with this statement because like this person said back then music used to lift your spirits and calm your anger, not enhance it. I used to watch YouTube videos on hidden messages in songs. The songs I found hidden messages were songs that were popular at the time. I did kind of think is was a whole bunch of b.s but another part of me thought it was true and it made me even more interested in Music I guess. I kinda do disagree with this statement because some artist today makes great songs everyone can have great vibes to. For example Despacito by Justin Bieber.
Aiden T.i have to disargee with option 2 because it's really just the old generation saying that music has change.Their use to listening to olg generation music.A couple explains of old generation artists were michael jaskson ,whitteny houston, and many more.plus most music back then would have raised ya spirits and usually calm your anger.new generation music doesn't do what the old generation did to young minds. Now it's more about to violenece and so on .
ReplyDeleteMark G.
ReplyDeleteI chose option 2. I agree with the quote because in reality it is true. This day in age of hip hop/rap music is based on money, drugs, cars, and girls. Back in the days such as early 80's up until late 90's rap music used to send out a message or even tell a story and that's how most rappers would express themselves but now it's got to a point where people aren't unique anymore with their own music and just rapping about doing sexual things with females and taking all sorts of drugs and etc. But that shouldn't be the case because that's sending out the wrong message to young people in this society today. I mean i'm not going to sit here and say ALL music in this day of age are bad influences but in the genre of rap/hip hop music, i can honestly say it's not what it used to be anymore.
Kahlil B.
ReplyDeleteI chose option 2. I believe that music has changed dramatically over the years. Music has an effect on everybody in different ways. music can make people happy and joyful sometimes it can make people depressed or get out of there depression. some people use music to express there feelings. music has changed so much that some old rappers might be disappointed on how music is today.
Emanuel U. I am going to choose topic number 2 because I think that the quote is wrong and here's why. Although you cant deny the fact that music has changed over the years but I believe that music today is just as good as before it might be muffled words and not as meaningful as the old music but a lot of the older generations like to talk bad about the new music and its just our liking because we grew up in a different time now me personally i like both the old rap/hip hop and r&b as well as I like the new stuff but you cant get mad because someone prefers the newer music over the old stuff because tbh music now is all about making a vibe we dont really listen the words that are said in the songs we just like to vibe with the flow and beat. But there is still artists that make meaningful songs today such as kendrick lamar, J.cole etc.

I chose option 2. I do feel like music has changed alot. I feel like rappers these days can say whatever they want as long as its catchy and people enjoy the music. I like rappers like Lil Uzi is a very good rapper and he is known for saying the same words but making it sound catchy. The beat is another thing that people look at these days.

This topic has been very controversial in today's generation. I believe that the type of music you listen to doesn't change your behavior. I listen to rap and it doesn't change my behavior.
